S-Tier
Vengeance Demon Hunter
Vengeance Demon Hunters dominate the tank meta completely, having been a force to reckon with for quite a while now. It’s hard to remember when any spec was as popular in Mythic+, with more than 80% of all keys at 15 and above having a Vengeance DH in the teams.
And it’s no surprise to see these numbers because the spec is truly S-tier. Even despite the nerfs rolled out earlier in the season, Vengeance remains unrivaled among tanks and an absolute favorite among players.
This spec has everything needed for top-tier gameplay: on-point damage, especially AoE, impressive survivability, and fantastic utility. With their large health pool, excellent self-healing, and powerful defenses, Vengeance DHs can survive even the most dire situations, soaking up tons of damage without any significant issues.
They can buff their team’s magical damage output and showcase incredible crowd control with their Sigils. As if that weren’t enough, this spec is also very pug-friendly due to its well-deserved popularity in the community.
We don’t know if Vengeance’s dominance will carry on in War Within, but right now, this spec is absolutely broken, and it is delivering the best performance any tank has ever shown in Dragonflight.
A-Tier
Guardian Druid
Of course, it doesn’t quite match Vengeance DH, but if we put our champ aside for a moment, Guardian Druid is looking pretty good this season. While this spec has definitely seen better days, it still offers solid performance.
At first glance, it might seem like a classic tank with high survivability and modest damage output. It can take a punch, has efficient self-sustain, and remains stable in the Mythic+ environment.
However, Guardians can also have a bunch of tricks up their sleeve with their group-buffing Mark of the Wild and overall group utility. All of this combined places Guardian Druid firmly in the A-tier and, if played in a well-coordinated team, even gives it a chance to compete with Vengeance in some scenarios.
Protection Paladin
Prot Pally makes the second most popular tank choice after Vengeance this season. Overall, their toolkit is pretty solid, with good control and decent group utility, thanks to their Blessings.
Although relying mostly on kiting and smaller pulls to survive, they remain quite durable, largely due to their excellent off-healing abilities. All these advantages help Prot Paladins perform well at higher levels, earning them a spot in the A-tier of our rankings.
B-Tier
Protection Warrior
This is a very well-rounded spec with solid performance across the board, though it doesn’t reach any exceptional heights in any aspect. Their durability is good, control is decent, and damage output is average, with Battle Shout working quite well for melee comps that lack a DPS Warrior.
Prot Warriors are good at everything, but they don’t particularly stand out, so we rightfully place them in the middle of our tier list, hoping they can do much better in seasons to come.
Blood Death Knight
The biggest issue with this spec is its lack of control, which makes Blood DKs rely almost entirely on their teammates for ad control.
Despite this, they still bring a lot of damage to the table and boast a fantastic group-wide buff against magical damage, which is quite valuable given the dominance of casters in the DPS meta. However, when it comes to survivability, they don’t exactly shine, and their overall utility toolkit tends to be quite niche.
C-Tier
Brewmaster Monk
Brewmaster Monks used to boast decent damage, but Blizzard decided to nerf their main strength this season, making the spec even less appealing to M+ players. Even before the tweaks, Brewmaster had extremely low tackiness, arguably the lowest of all tanks in the game.
Despite their fairly good mitigation mechanic, this spec’s HP pool leaves much to be desired, and considering how high the damage numbers can get in dungeons these days, Brewmasters are just not a viable option for Mythic+ at all.
